05/28/02: Mackenzie Highway Washout

Last week the Mackenzie Highway washed out just north of Fort Providence. I thought you would be interested in these shots. These are of the Mackenzie already broken with the ice still along the shores, spring is here!

05/21/02: Ice Bridge
Submited by: Joe Bailey
In Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, most of the store shelves are getting pretty bare, why? Yellowknife is accessed by crossing Mackenzie River (ice bridge in the winter months and ferry in the summer months) and anytime in between (freeze-up and break-up) Yellowknife is isolated from southern Canada. Some supplies are flown across the river by helicopter, but only in situations of necessity. For example milk is one such item and as such doubles in price.

05/20/02: Ice Breaks on Mackenzie
Submited by: Joe Bailey
The Mackenzie River ice broke at Fort Simpson today at 9:55 am, it jammed up for a bit, putting on a awesome display for the residents of nature's pure, raw power as it churned and flipped over huge "house size" ice blocks! When the ice jams, the river's water rises at an alarming rate.

Site History

01/09/01 - This website is two days old.

01/10/01 - Ariane added a food page. Ariane has volunteered to be the food page editor, so send her your recipes and food stories. Norm and Harlow added some book listings to the Library. We could use reviews for any of these books, both gems and stinkers.

01/15/01 - Added some thoughts on bears and bad people. Norm Miller has posted some book reviews, which I should have up by tonight.

04/19/02 - The old wwwboard was so unreliable that it had to be replaced. The new boards are based on Zope Squishdot, which is quite robust. Sorry for all the downtime.
